LGBTQ+ individuals go through the process of coming out - a personal process of exploring one’s sexual orientation and sharing it with other people. However, this process is influenced by various elements such as age, social class, and ethnicity. Every coming out process is unique and different for every individual. This study aimed to examine the coming out experiences of the Filipino LBGTQ+ individuals at home. Seven participants were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to describe their coming out experiences at home. Eight themes to illustrate their experience were identified: Encountering Dilemmas prior to Coming Out; Becoming Aware of and Interacting with the LGBTQ+ community; Discovering Gender and Sexuality; Deciding to Come Out; Coming Out to their Families; Developing Conviction; Navigating Family Relationships; and Realizing Coming Out is a Continuous Process. Future studies may use a wider range of participants and include their families, apply a more recent identity development model, and incorporate the concepts of Filipino psychology to add depth to the understanding of the coming out experience of Filipino LGBTQ+ individuals.
